Best Toys for Cats and Kittens

Best Toys for Cats and Kittens – Hi everyone, as I stated before I am adopting a kitten soon. It has been over 10 years since I have raised a kitten and I need to brush up on what my kitty would possibly like to play with and what toys would be beneficial during her first year of life.

From wands with feathers to chew toys to teething kittens. What will my new kitty like? Well, I wasn’t sure so I did a little research.

Best Toys for Cats and Kittens – Cats Are Smart & Playful

Cats love to be mentally and physically stimulated. Let’s take a look at the big cats in the wild. They train their cubs to pounce, stalk, hunt and trap their prey. The cubs play with one another stimulating the hunter within!

Big cats in the wild. Cubs at play!

Domestic cats are not that different. They love to do the same things and are taught the same things when they play with their siblings. Hunt, trap, and pounce on their prey!

A cat playground tree (affiliate link) will be great for this activity, they can hide and run and pretend to be stalking their prey far up in the trees!

This type of play takes on the same roles for domestic cats. It is very important to let your kittens or cats express their natural instincts.

The joy it all brings to their humans in the entire household! Who doesn’t love to watch kittens play? I know I sure do! Everyone loves kittens! They bring so much happiness and laughter and playing with your cats is a bonding time for the cat and her human family!

Toys Don’t have to Cost a Fortune

Toys can get very expensive. Let’s get creative with the things we have around our house and make some cat toys. We know that cats love chasing and stalking while playing!

Find some yarn or a string, attach some feathers to the end and bounce it up and down in front of the kitty and watch what happens next!

Running the string across the floor, kitty soon see’s it… She lays close to the floor… not taking her eyes off her prey she is tracking and she steadies herself, watches every single move….she wiggles her body, flicks her tail and… POUNCE!

Whoa! Kitty almost caught it, so you should try again. By this time her humans are laughing this increases her happiness too! She watches as you move the string again with anticipation and…

POUNCE! She captures her prey and now she feels like a natural hunter!

Praise her and play again!

Best Toys for Cats and Kittens – Boxes!

All kittens love to play in boxes! It’s in their gene pull haha!

Kitty’s love everything and everything that moves! From her humans wiggling their toes to their fingers running across a couch! You can bet she will chase your fingers and try to catch them!

They love chasing the laser pointer! Heck, don’t you just have a terrific time with the laser too! I know that I sure do! They get really good exercise chasing that red dot everywhere! They even go around and around till they get dizzy!

It’s so funny!

What else do kittens like to play with:

  • Cat wands! Wands with feathers attached to the end provide tons of fun!
  • Boxes! Cats love to play with boxes! You could spend tons of money on cutesy toys and what will your cat like instead? The box that the toys come in! Crack me up, to say the least! They love hiding and playing and sleeping in their boxes!
  • Catnip! Some cats love catnip! Play a mouse stuffed with it, you can rub it on bouncy balls. Cats love them some catnip! Now, I wouldn’t give my new kitten catnip but that’s just my preference.

My cat Sparrow never did like catnip but my other cats sure did! They would roll all over it, rubbing their cheeks on it just to get it all over their face!

Water Faucets! My son had a cat that loved to hop on the bathroom counter and wait for someone to turn on the faucet with just dribbles dropping down and she would drink fresh water from the tap.

I had another cat that loved to bat in the water and try to catch it! Fun times!

I’ll Pounce on You Yet…

After your playtime with kitty, the best thing she will want to do is…

Take a Nap! Cats sleep about 75% if they live. Kittens and senior cats sleep about 12 to 16 hours a day and if they tend to sleep more than that then you have to take them to get checked out by your local vet to make sure there isn’t an underlying illness.

Cats love to take naps, naps on the couch, under the couch, in boxes, in laundry baskets, on top of the fridge. Yes, I even had a cat that loved to sleep on top of the fridge! It made me so mad! Haha!

Anywhere and everywhere was the best sleeping place, under the table and anywhere on the floor. In the middle of the walkway… they just plop and fall asleep!

You can buy cat toys at your local pet store or big box store. Or the grocery store! You can also make cat toys at home and in the long run, the best toy for a cat is just stuff! Boxes and bags and anything that makes noise!

They will bat items off shelves and tables just to hear it drop and hit the floor! Plus your reaction and laughter excite them too!

Cats make people happy and people make cats happy! They bring so much joy to your home! Bonding times and loving times and an occasional nap together will bond your cat to you forever!

  1. Haha, yes, cardboard boxes do it every time for our cats! They go crazy over the simplest of things and it is just so entertaining to watch them. They do bring so much joy into our house and we all love them even when they are doing things they are not supposed to be doing, like knocking things off the shelves. Pets help us grow and can teach us a lot about unconditional love….. everyone should have at least one pet!

      Exactly Andrew,
Cat’s teach compassion and unconditional love. They are a joy to have in my home. I think it’s funny when they prefer the box the toys came in! Haha, boxes are a lot cheaper and cat’s get hours of fun in them 🙂
      Thank you for your comment,

  2. You have a lot of really great suggestions in your post. There are so many things already at home which would make great cat toys.
I have only ever bought a tall scratching post for my cats, as all the other toys were found at home. They love chasing string or yarn, an old slipper is another favourite. My son has a toy gun with a red dot which we shine on the wall and the cats chase it, trying to catch the dot. This is really funny to watch and is lots of fun for everyone. Thanks for sharing your ideas, there are some new things I will try out.

I think us humans get as much enjoyment when playing with our furry children. They sure do bring lots of happiness and laughter into the house!
      Thank you for your comment,

  3. My rescue cat likes to play with a mouse that has catnip inside, she will carry it around and slap it across the floor. Each cat will have different taste in toys, sometimes you have to get several before you find one that they like to play with.
Once you find their sweet spot, they will play for hours with their toys. My cat will hide her mouse for days and bring it out and play with it again.
Do you think inside cats want to find a target to stalk like the big cats, mine will sit in an open window and look out for hours at the birds.

    1. Donna Rayne says:

Hi John, cats are really smart animals. I do believe they sit and stalk potential prey while looking outside. My cat would see a bird and give that bird chattering and then try to lunge and hit the window. He would shake his head and I would tell him, “you can’t reach them, Sparrow, they’re outside!” He would just meow and try again! Haha, it was so cute!

  4. Hi Donna,
I love this article, especially when you say toys for cats and kittens do not have to be expensive. You are so right! In fact, anything we have no use for around the house can be such great toys for them! Empty toilet paper roll, empty bottles, anything that you can hang somewhere and moves with the wind, etc. It’s up to our creativity, and their human friends being willing to spend the time playing with them. 🙂

    1. Donna Rayne says:

      Hi Joo,
Anything that makes noise or rolls across the floor a cat will love. Cats have always been my favorite animal. I’m going to adopt a kitten soon and will provide pictures of her journey with my son and I.
I love spending time with my animals, in fact, they are not my pets but, my furry children 🙂
